About this program
UNSW's dual Master of Public Health (Extension) and Master of Infectious Diseases Intelligence is a two-year program combining broad public health training in epidemiology, biostatistics, health promotion and policy with specialised infectious disease surveillance, outbreak investigation and mitigation skills. The Public Health Extension component adds research methodology and an advanced research project on top of standard public health coursework, while the infectious diseases component builds specific expertise in controlling disease spread across populations, requiring a genuinely multisectoral understanding given the ongoing threat of emerging disease outbreaks. Graduates typically work in government, military and first-responder organisations, primary care and community health services in Australia and internationally. Admissions
Inherited from the base Master of Public Health (Extension) admission pathway (program 9046), which this combined program shares. There are two standard pathways, plus a third exceptional pathway: (1) a three-year undergraduate degree in any field plus two years of full-time professional or volunteer experience in a relevant field (health, allied health, medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, paramedicine, environmental health, health administration, policy studies, development studies, or health-focused roles in emergency services, management, research, engineering, law, science, economics, journalism or policy), OR (2) an undergraduate degree plus honours, or a postgraduate degree, in a relevant field, OR (3) in exceptional circumstances, extensive professional health experience (minimum five years full-time) without a relevant degree, assessed via interview with the School of Population Health.
