About this program
UNSW's Master of Surgery (Research) requires candidates to make an original contribution to knowledge in a field related to surgery, generally requiring at least three years of prior surgical training and a minimum five-year gap since completing an undergraduate medical degree before submitting the thesis. Candidates can enrol full-time, part-time or externally at an affiliated teaching hospital or research facility, with annual progress reviews by the faculty's Higher Degree Committee. Because the degree is entirely research-driven, the specific surgical research question depends on the individual candidate's clinical experience and research interests. It suits experienced surgical trainees or practising surgeons with a genuine research question in their surgical specialty who want a formal research credential, often as a pathway toward an academic surgical career or a leadership role in surgical practice improvement.

A candidate for the degree shall A candidate for the degree shall have been awarded the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the Committee. In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree. If the Committee is not satisfied with the qualifications submitted by an applicant the Committee may require the applicant to undergo such assessment or carry out such work as the Committee may prescribe, before permitting enrolment.
