Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
Victoria University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia
About this program
Engineering at VU runs on problem-based learning rather than the standard lecture-then-lab format: students in the College of Engineering and Science are handed open-ended engineering problems from early in the course and work through them in teams, with staff acting more as facilitators than lecturers delivering content. It's accredited by Engineers Australia across its specialisations (civil, mechanical, electrical and electronic, and architectural engineering are the usual streams), so graduates come out eligible for graduate membership straight away.
The four-year honours degree includes a substantial industry placement component, and VU's location in Melbourne's west, close to manufacturing, construction and infrastructure projects rather than the CBD, shapes a lot of the applied project work students get assigned. It's a smaller, less internationally ranked engineering school than the sandstone universities, but the trade-off VU offers is smaller class sizes in the specialist years and a teaching style built around solving real problems rather than sitting exams on theory alone.
Students choose their specialisation after a shared first year of core mathematics, physics and engineering fundamentals, then move into discipline-specific design and project units.
