About this program
Monash's Master of Professional Psychology is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council as a generalist fifth year of psychology study, preparing selected psychology graduates for Australia's '5+1 internship model' of registration rather than the extended clinical training pathway of the Master of Clinical Psychology. Students build psychotherapeutic and assessment skills alongside professional and ethical knowledge through coursework, workshops and supervised professional experience, developing the critical and reflexive thinking psychologists need across diverse practice settings. Because it maps onto the fifth-year requirement for general registration, graduates go on to complete a supervised internship year before registering fully as a psychologist. It suits psychology honours graduates who want to become registered psychologists through the standard generalist pathway, working across mental health, community, education, corporate or private practice settings, rather than the more specialised clinical psychology track.

Course structure
1 term of coursework
- The course comprises 48 points of study, structured into two parts: Part A. Applied studies (36 points) and Part B. Professional experience (12 points). Units are 6 points unless otherwise stated. Part A. Applied studies (36 points) You must complete the following units: EDF5561 Clinical case formulation EDF5562 Ethics for professional practice EDF5563 Cognitive assessment EDF5564 Research applications for practitioners EDF5565 Psychopathology and personality EDF5566 Evidence-based interventions: cognitive-behaviour therapies Part B. Professional experience (12 points) Part B includes 300 hours of supervised professional experience activities. Attendance is mandatory for the professional experience component within each unit. Admissions
A fourth year of psychology study from any course accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), which may be a graduate diploma or bachelor's honours degree, with at least a high credit (65%) average in fourth year psychology. These qualifications must have been completed within the last 10 years of the commencement date of further studies. Applicants with international qualifications will need to have their qualifications assessed by the Australian Psychological Society (APS). In addition, applicants must provide evidence of demonstrated suitability for work as a professional psychologist determined by completion of a supplementary form and satisfactory referee reports (one academic and one professional), relevant voluntary or paid work experience, and an interview.
