About this program
Monash's Master of Urban Planning and Design, accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia, combines planning practice and design theory to prepare graduates for genuine twenty-first-century city challenges including climate change, urban growth and technological transitions. Real-world project studios organised around themes like the Compact, Expanding, Transforming and Inclusive City have students develop practical planning and design solutions each semester, working alongside classmates from architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, law, economics and geography backgrounds. That deliberately multidisciplinary cohort mirrors how urban planning actually works in practice, where planners constantly collaborate with professionals from other built-environment disciplines rather than working in isolation. Career paths span statutory planning roles in local government, urban design positions in state agencies, and roles in firms specialising in community planning and affordable housing, both in Australia and internationally, and the course suits graduates from any of those contributing disciplines who want to move into urban planning and design specifically.

- This course comprises 96 points structured into five parts: Part A. Studio practices (48 points), Part B. Critical contexts (24 points), Part C. Disciplinary practices (12 Points), and Part D. Free electives (12 points). You must complete OHS1000 (Introduction to art and design health and safety) (0 points) if not previously completed. Note: If you are able to provide evidence of successful completion of equivalent study for particular unit(s) you may be eligible for credit for prior studies. Each case will be considered individually. Units are 6 points unless otherwise indicated. Part A.
