About this program
This course provides a streamlined postgraduate pathway, with a single application process, for students working toward registration as a psychologist. Graduates gain skills in individual casework alongside an understanding of prevention, research, development, and evaluation at both the individual and systems level, and are eligible to apply for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) after one further year of supervised practice. The two-year, full-time program (with part-time study available on approval) combines coursework, practicum, and research components, including two practica in the final year that provide hands-on experience in real-world settings. Murdoch describes it as the only streamlined postgraduate pathway in Western Australia for students aiming specifically at psychologist registration. Registered and clinical psychologist roles do appear on Australia's skilled occupation lists, but the full training and registration pathway is long, and many graduates instead work in research, human resources, or counselling-adjacent roles that do not require full registration.

Admissions
Entry into this course is competitive and requires a Bachelor's degree in psychology, accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (or Australian Psychological Society-approved alternative). The Academic Chair will consider applications based on an assessment of the student's preparedness for this course and on current teaching and supervision resources available to the School. Subject to exceptions on the basis of consideration by the Academic Chair, only students with a distinction average or better in their undergraduate psychology units will be considered for admission. Applicants will also need to supply referee reports and a personal statement that detail their past accomplishments, future career plans, and interest in this course. Interviews will be offered to the best candidates. Applications with qualifications obtained outside Australia must have a formal assessment completed by the Australian Psychological Society before submitting an application for study. Students with overseas qualifications who are accepted into the course and who wish to seek registration in Australia after graduation should ensure that their undergraduate qualifications meet the requirements of the Psychology Board of Australia for equivalence to a three-year Australian degree in Psychology. Two places per intake in this course are reserved for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants. Reserved places will only be offered if there are eligible applicants, otherwise the places will be offered to other applicants.
