About this program
Progress your career as a building designer or draftsperson with this advanced qualification from TAFE Queensland. This course meets some of the technical requirements for you to apply for a Building Design - Low Rise or Building Design - Medium Rise licence.
According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as building and surveying technicians grew very strongly over the past five years and is expected to see stable growth in the future. Employers are looking for qualified candidates who are reliable, work well in a team, and have a strong work ethic.
In this course you will learn specialist skills in building design for residential and small-scale commercial projects. You will learn to understand client needs to develop building design concepts and create sustainable design solutions. Utilising a suite of software programs for computer-aided drafting (CAD) and presentation, you will produce and present drawings and models. Our industry-expert teachers will ensure you develop the theoretical and practical skills to produce high quality work that complies with occupational health and safety and building code requirements.
Successful completion of this course will equip you with the practical skills and knowledge needed to enter the building design industry. It also provides some of the key requirements for applying for your Low Rise and Medium Rise Building Design licences in the future.

Admissions
Completion of an Australian Year 12 qualification, or the equivalent international qualification. Skills check Domestic students You will be invited to complete a Skills Check following your application submission, before enrolling to your studies. This helps you to decide if your course is right for you and allows us to understand your current abilities in English, Maths, as well as using Digital technology. The recommended benchmark levels for this course are 4 in English, 4 in Maths and 4 in Digital Technology. If you are applying for a VET Student Loan the required levels to meet academic eligibility, as outlined by Commonwealth guidelines, is Level 4 English and Maths. Prerequisite requirements As part of the entry requirements for this program you must meet at least one of the below requirements: - CPP40115 Certificate IV in Building Design Drafting, or - CPP40121 Certificate IV in Residential Drafting, or - 52757WA Certificate IV in Residential Building Drafting, or - Demonstrated relevant vocational experience, skills and knowledge commensurate with the scope of work covered in the core units of CPP40121 Certificate IV in Residential Drafting. Selection criteria Domestic students The following Selection criteria requirements apply only to domestic students: It is highly recommended that you have:- - successfully completed Year 12 (or equivalent) or have relevant experience and/or qualifications or are of mature age; - have sound literacy and numeracy skills; and - have sound computer skills. International Students The following Selection criteria requirements apply only to International Students: - English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5) or equivalent - For a list of all English Language tests accepted by TAFE Queensland International. - Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12. Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.
