About this program
UNSW's Bachelor of Economics (Honours) explores how the decisions of institutions and individuals interact to determine outcomes for the economy and society, covering traditional economic issues like unemployment, taxation and trade policy alongside genuinely pressing human challenges including inequality, climate change, corruption and access to education and healthcare. The honours pathway adds a research dimension on top of the standard degree, developing highly transferable analytical skills valued across policy, government, private sector and international organisation careers. Students can choose from three economics specialisations, build their own program, or combine economics with other business and commerce study, including through double degree options, and gain practical experience through internships, group consulting projects and global practicums. It suits high-achieving economics students who want genuine research training and deeper analytical rigour before entering the workforce or continuing into further postgraduate economics study.

Course structure
- Students must complete 144 UOC when taken as a standalone program. These UOC are made up of: Introductory Business Core (6 UOC) Economics Core Courses (48 UOC) Economics Electives (30 UOC) Business School Electives (12 UOC) Free Electives (36 UOC) General Education (12 UOC) Students may choose to use their Economics core and elective courses to complete an optional Economics major. Courses for the major are taken once but also meet core and elective course rules where listed. Students completing the degree as a standalone program may also choose to complete optional majors and minors from outside Economics by using their business electives

Admissions
To be admitted into the BEc(Hons) program, a student must have completed a Bachelor's degree with a major in Economics, Econometrics, Business Economics, Financial Economics, or Business Strategy and Economic Management. A student in a dual degree may gain entry to the BEc(Hons) prior to completing the requirements for the dual degree program if they have completed 144 UOC including all requirements for the relevant major. Students must have completed the equivalent of ECON2101 Microeconomics 2 and ECON2102 Macroeconomics 2, plus an econometrics course requirement that depends on the specialisation. It is also recommended that a student complete ECON3202 Mathematical Economics, or an equivalent, before commencing the BEc(Hons). A student must have an overall Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 70 (or equivalent) with a discipline/major WAM of at least 70; the WAM required for entry may be higher depending on discipline and place availability. Full-time and part-time (over 3 semesters) study is available.
