About this program
UNSW's Master of Built Environment is a research-only degree letting students develop expert knowledge in a chosen area of built environment research, involving an original investigation more limited in scope than a doctorate but still genuinely research-driven. Running 1.5 to 2 years full-time, students produce a thesis of up to 75,000 words under supervision, with all candidates required to complete a research seminar course in their first session to build appropriate research methodology from the outset. Because the degree is entirely research-focused, the specific built environment topic, whether in architecture, planning, construction or another related field, depends on the individual student's interests and available supervision. It suits built environment graduates with a genuine research question who want a formal research credential, often as a pathway toward a PhD or a specialised research role in the built environment sector, rather than students seeking a taught postgraduate qualification.

Admissions
As a general guide, the minimum requirement for admission to Masters by Research is an appropriate undergraduate degree with honours that includes a substantial research component or a qualification or combination of qualifications considered to be equivalent by the faculty's Higher Degree Committee.
