About this program
UNSW's Master of City Planning combines core courses building disciplinary foundations with elective pathways in city development and renewal, healthy sustainable communities, history and theory, or city design, culminating in a capstone project delivered with City Futures, Australia's leading urban research centre. Coursework is explicitly designed to satisfy the Planning Institute of Australia's key competency areas, giving graduates a genuinely accredited path into professional planning practice rather than a generalist urban studies qualification. Using Sydney and New South Wales as a working laboratory for understanding urban challenges in global context, the program builds the analytical, stakeholder-management and communication skills planners need across development, environment and community interests. It suits graduates from a related discipline, or professionals whose work already touches planning systems and agencies, who want full professional planning qualification and accreditation.

Admissions
A bachelor's degree with a credit average (equivalent to a UNSW WAM of 65). Applicants who do not meet this requirement may be able to enter the Graduate Certificate in City Planning in the first instance. This will be at the discretion of the Program Director or Academic Coordinator who will assess applications on a case-by-case basis. Note: Graduates of UNSW City Planning (Honours), or equivalent programs accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia are ineligible for admission as they have already met the learning outcomes of this degree. Students with an undergraduate degree in a related field are able to apply for up to 24 UOC in advanced standing, subject to agreement of the Program Director on a case-by-case basis.
