Master of Data Science
University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD, Australia
About this program
UQ's Master of Data Science is a joint offering between the School of Mathematics and Physics and ITEE, which in practice means the curriculum leans more heavily on statistical theory and mathematical foundations than a lot of competing data science master's programs that are essentially applied-CS degrees with a statistics unit bolted on: students spend real time on probability theory and statistical inference before getting to the machine learning and big-data-systems units.
The program is designed to take students from varied undergraduate backgrounds (maths, science, commerce, engineering) through to job-ready data science skills, with an extended pathway for students needing foundational programming or statistics coursework first. UQ's genuine research strength in areas like computational biology and bioinformatics (there's a large research presence in these fields at UQ, including at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience) means some students end up doing capstone projects with an unusually strong life-sciences data flavour compared to the finance- or tech-heavy capstones typical elsewhere.
Brisbane's data science job market is smaller than Sydney's or Melbourne's, but Queensland Health, mining and agribusiness analytics, and a growing gov-tech sector provide a reasonably steady set of local capstone and graduate employer partners for students who complete the program.
