About this program
UNSW's Master of Data Science and Decisions trains current and future data scientists and analysts to meet strong workforce demand, building broad, advanced knowledge across mathematics and statistics, computer science, and economics before students specialise more deeply in one of four available areas. Two pathways accommodate different statistics backgrounds: Option 1 covers foundational probability and statistical theory for students with limited prior exposure, while Option 2 assumes existing knowledge of probability, hypothesis testing and estimation methods, letting students skip straight to more advanced coursework. Research and communication skills are developed through genuine project work rather than only classroom instruction, reflecting how data science actually gets applied in industry settings. It suits graduates from any quantitative background who want genuinely interdisciplinary data science training, with the flexible statistics pathway accommodating both newcomers to formal statistical theory and those who've already studied it.

Admissions
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the transfer of credit towards a program from another degree. The following policy applies to students with degrees from other institutions and students with an undergraduate degree from UNSW. In limited cases, students with previous postgraduate or honours-level coursework, including Honours graduates from UNSW (or equivalent), may receive advanced standing/recognition of prior learning. Advanced standing is limited to a maximum of 36 UOC. Students who receive the maximum 36 UOC may complete the degree with 60 UOC, or 1.3 years of full-time study. Advanced standing will only be granted for courses at the honours or postgraduate level, not courses at the undergraduate level. Students must apply for advanced standing and the School of Mathematics and Statistics will determine if the student's completed coursework is deemed equivalent to UNSW count...
